Profile
Frances sets a new benchmark for intimate dining experiences in San Francisco, effortlessly intertwining culinary innovation with a welcoming ambiance. As we arrived, the soft illumination from vintage light fixtures spilled across the polished hardwood floors, creating a gentle warmth that enveloped us. The host stand radiated a sense of genuine hospitality, where the staff greeted us with an earnest enthusiasm that made us feel as if we were entering a cherished friend’s home rather than a bustling restaurant. The space itself is compact yet thoughtfully designed, fostering a sense of closeness among diners. As we settled at the counter, we were immediately captivated by the rhythmic choreography of the staff, gliding seamlessly from the kitchen to the dining area, their movements precise yet unhurried.
The soundscape was a delightful medley of clinking glassware and soft conversations, punctuated by the occasional laughter that echoed warmly throughout the cozy tables. Chef Melissa Perello’s menu, a celebration of California’s vibrant agricultural bounty, is a testament to her dedication to seasonal ingredients and local farms. The evening’s offerings featured a four-course tasting menu that felt more like an elaborate conversation with the seasons, each dish unfolding with a narrative of flavors and textures. A standout moment arrived in the form of a perfectly seared scallop, its caramelized exterior yielding to a tender interior accompanied by a delicate purée of seasonal greens. Each bite was a vibrant reminder of the thoughtful sourcing that Frances champions.
The beverage program also deserves special mention; the carefully curated wine list complements the culinary offerings beautifully, with suggestions that elevate the dining experience without overshadowing the dishes. As we savored each course, the attentive staff was eager to share stories behind the selections, enhancing our appreciation for the artistry at play. As we lingered over dessert, an ethereal lemon tart, the ambiance shifted, the lighting deepening into a soft embrace, encouraging us to slow down and savor the moment. Frances is more than just a meal; it’s an experience that invites you to connect—whether with the food, the staff, or the fellow diners who share this intimate space. Our concierge recommends securing a seat at the counter for an immersive view of the culinary action, allowing you to engage with the chefs and catch the subtle interplay of flavors as they come to life.

The food is superb. I got the chef's tasting menu with wine pairing and the food was absolutely on point. The wine pairings were good at the price point.
There's no need for me to get into the details of every dish because every single dish was utter perfection. Local oysters were awesome I was so glad this is my first time trying hog Island. Every single dish was familiar flavors but done like you haven't had them ever before. And exceptional but still approachable. Just really good comfort food with the experience of it being novel. This is a very hard thing to accomplish but Francis does it perfectly I have to come back and get the tasting menu every time, it was a magic experience and the perfect amount of food. The lumberjack cake is in fact that good and the combined bite with the burnt honey ice cream is unforgettable texture and flavor experience.
