Profile
As the evening light softens and the golden hues of sunset filter through the arched windows, the refined bar at FINO beckons with an enticing array of cocktails. We were immediately captivated by the expert mixology, where classic Italian aperitifs mingle with bold local flavors. The rich mahogany of the bar, polished to a warm sheen, serves as the backdrop for a vibrant selection of wines from Italy’s finest regions, curated with great care to complement the evening’s culinary offerings. It’s a prelude that sets the tone for a memorable dining experience. Upon entering, the ambiance wraps around you like a well-tailored suit, blending classic elegance with a cozy familiarity. High ceilings and the gentle crackle of the fireplace create an inviting warmth, while the open kitchen offers a tantalizing glimpse of the culinary team at work, their movements choreographed in a dance of precision and passion.
The aroma of fresh basil and simmering tomatoes permeates the air, drawing us deeper into the heart of this family-owned establishment, a San Francisco institution since 1989. We found ourselves seated at a beautifully set table, the flickering candlelight casting playful shadows across our plates as we perused the menu. The server, Alma, greeted us with genuine warmth, her enthusiasm palpable as she guided us through the evening’s selections. We opted for the house-made tagliatelle, its silky texture a canvas for the rich ragu that had simmered to perfection. Each bite was a testament to the kitchen’s commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, a hallmark of their culinary philosophy.
The pacing of the courses felt just right, allowing us to linger over each plate, relishing the expertly paired Chianti that danced alongside the rich flavors. As the evening progressed, the energy in the tables shifted seamlessly. Laughter and conversation intertwined with the soft melodies of Italian classics, creating a vibrant yet intimate atmosphere. Guests around us leaned into the experience, sharing plates and stories, while the attentive staff ensured that every moment was flawlessly executed. A standout dish was the classic Parmigiana di Melanzane, which not only tasted divine but also evoked the comfort of a home-cooked Italian meal. While the dining experience at FINO is undeniably exceptional, the true magic lies in the details: the knowledgeable staff, the thoughtfully curated wine list, and the heartfelt passion that permeates every aspect of service. Our time there felt like a lovely embrace, one that made us reluctant to leave the table at the end of the night. Our concierge recommends requesting a table by the fireplace for a particularly cozy experience, especially if you can time your visit around sunset to fully enjoy the interplay of light and ambiance.

A special mention goes to Charles-both manager and waiter who has been there all these years. His dedication and hospitality are unmatched, and he’s a big part of what makes Fino’s feel like home. If you looking for authentic Italian cuisine and top-notch service, Fino’s should be your first choice. It’s more than a restaurant, it’s a tradition and make sure ask for Charles to be your server.
Our server Alma was wonderful. Attentive and made great suggestions. My wife went traditional with a Parm, which was well prepared and just enough cheese. I almost always prefer my own sauce made at home as 99% of them are too acidic. But this one was great.
I was intrigued by the contadina which means peasant in Italian. Had never heard of it, not Im a HUGE fan! A bowl of veggies, potatoes, chicken, prawns and local Italian sausage. The broth was spectacular! Look forward to another trip back here soon.
We didn’t have a reservation, but the staff was incredibly sweet and still made an effort to find us a seat. A special shoutout to Alma, who took such great care of us and made the experience even more wonderful.
There are plenty of great vegetarian options — we tried the tortellini pesto and it was delicious. My husband and I shared a pasta, and they thoughtfully split it for us. Even dessert was perfectly customized — we asked for just a single scoop since we weren’t very hungry, and they happily accommodated.
Overall, amazing food, warm service, and a lovely experience. Definitely a must-visit!
