Profile
As you step through the threshold of Madcap, the tantalizing aroma of seared meats and the subtle sweetness of caramelized vegetables wrap around you like a warm embrace. This charming enclave in San Anselmo is an orchestra of culinary artistry, where the sounds of sizzling pans harmonize with the soft murmur of conversation, setting a vibrant yet intimate tone for the evening ahead. The soft glow of pendant lights casts a golden hue over rustic wooden tables, each adorned with delicate glassware that sparkles like jewels under the ambient light, inviting you to linger. The host stand, adorned with seasonal blooms, exudes a sense of welcoming warmth, while the attentive staff, clad in understated elegance, guide you to your table with an effortless grace.
The layout strikes a harmonious balance between communal energy and private retreat, allowing for both lively gatherings and serene dining experiences. Throughout the evening, the rhythm of the service flows seamlessly—dishes arrive with impeccable timing, each course unfolding like a carefully crafted narrative that draws you deeper into the culinary experience. The menu at Madcap is a celebration of seasonal Asian-American fusion, showcasing the talents of a kitchen team that feels both innovative and deeply respectful of tradition. As we sampled the tasting menu, each dish felt like a revelation, a thoughtful interplay of textures and flavors. A standout moment was the delicate salmon sashimi, lightly kissed with yuzu and paired with a velvety avocado mousse that danced across the palate.
The playful combination of sweet and savory in the pork belly bao, with its fluffy bun and tangy pickled vegetables, left a lasting impression, embodying the restaurant’s philosophy of balancing boldness with finesse. The beverage program offers a meticulously curated selection of wines and craft cocktails that admirably complement the food. We found ourselves enchanted by a Riesling that beautifully balanced acidity and fruitiness, enhancing the intricate flavors of the dishes. The energy in the tables shifted as the night progressed, with laughter and clinking glasses creating a symphony of joy that seemed to amplify the experience. Guests often linger over dessert, savoring every bite of the seasonal fruit tart, its buttery crust and rich custard a fitting finale to a remarkable meal. Our concierge recommends reserving a table in the intimate front tables, where the ambiance feels especially inviting as the light begins to dim. Arrive at dusk to enjoy the enchanting transition from the warmth of the sunset to the cozy glow of candlelight, allowing the evening to unfold as a perfect encapsulation of the spirit of Madcap.

Loved it and highly recommend!
One tiny little comment is when I walked in, no one was sitting in the front room so I thought for a second I’ll be there by myself, but then I was shown into the back room and it was full. It would have been nice to see a few people up front.
We also got to chat with the owner a bit and that was very nice and educational.
Thank you!!
Every dish was masterfully crafted, you can tell the team really pays attention to detail. The ingredients were fresh and seasonal, portions felt just right, and each plate was uniquely presented.
The staff was warm and welcoming, making sure the pace of the dinner was spot on.
The wine selection was solid, I’d recommend the Cobb (Klopp Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast near Sebastopol), which paired beautifully with every dish.
We'll be back in 2026 to try the new menu!
